Empowering Rwandans
Breaking the Circle of Poverty Through Hope & Employment
In a world that often feels broken, divided, and disconnected, the responsibility of sharing, spreading, and giving hope becomes even more significant. This is especially true in Rwanda, where the youth, aged 15-31, face a challenging job market, with the most recent unemployment rate standing at over 17%. While there has been some improvement from the previous year's 23%, the job sector still needs to put in substantial effort to accommodate the increasing number of young individuals entering the labor market annually. Presently, there are around 200,000 more job seekers than available positions, and this disparity continues to grow year by year.
However, amidst these challenges, DuHope and The Hope Shop are playing a crucial role in making a positive impact. At the moment, they employ 16 Rwandan staff, and they have 10 artisans working at DuHope. Remarkably, two of the employees are in school full time, while three are married with children, and all of them are caring for other family members. Considering the high unemployment rates, the burden falls on the employed individuals to support their families. They are expected to pay school fees for younger siblings and contribute to rent and family expenses, which can be quite demanding, especially for those experiencing their first job.
These artisans at DuHope face a unique situation, as they have never had formal employment before. Just imagine being 35 years old, learning to read and write, and finally obtaining your first job. Despite the challenges, these dedicated artisans, who have an average of five children each, are not only providing for their families but also supporting their extended families back in the villages.

Through their hard work, they are determined to create lasting positive change in their lives, the lives of their families, and even their friends.
