Ownership of Freedom: Walking in Liberty Given by Christ

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." - John 8:36

Freedom. It's a word that stirs something deep within us. We think of liberty, of choices, of the ability to determine our own path. But what if the truest freedom isn't about what we can do, but about who we can become?

At DuHope, we've learned that real freedom isn't the absence of struggle—it's the presence of peace in the midst of it. It's not about perfect circumstances, but about perfect trust.

Speciaoza knows this truth intimately. When she first came to DuHope, she carried the weight of past trauma. The pain was real, the wounds were deep, and freedom felt like a distant dream. But through daily devotions and Bible studies at DuHope, something beautiful began to happen.

"Prayer has helped me to live peacefully with others," Speciaoza shares. What started as a new discipline—praying every day—has become the foundation of a freedom she never imagined possible.

This is what ownership of freedom looks like: choosing to believe, day by day, that God's promises are true even when our feelings say otherwise.

Speciaoza

Prayer has become more than a habit for Speciaoza. She says, "It has greatly supported my healing journey, giving me something greater to believe in.” She told us she trusts that God is in control, and she can rely on Him for everything.

This is the paradox of true freedom—it comes not from being in control, but from surrendering control to the One who loves us perfectly. When we take ownership of this freedom, we stop trying to manage every outcome and start trusting the God who holds every outcome in His hands.

Her favorite verse captures this thought well: "I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted" (Job 42:2). Like Job, Speciaoza has learned that even in the midst of suffering, God's purposes prevail. Even when life doesn't make sense, His love never fails.

This is ownership of freedom—not claiming independence from God, but claiming dependence on Him.

Walking in Your Freedom

Perhaps you're reading this feeling anything but free. Maybe you're carrying burdens that feel too heavy, facing circumstances that seem impossible, or wrestling with pain from your past. Speciaoza's story is a gentle reminder that freedom is always available.

Taking ownership of your freedom in Christ means:

Starting where you are. Speciaoza began with simple daily prayer. Freedom doesn't require grand gestures—it starts with small, faithful steps toward God.

Believing what God says about you. Even when your feelings disagree, choose to trust His Word over your wounds. You are loved, chosen, and free—not because of what you've done, but because of what He's done.

Opening your hands. True freedom comes when we stop grasping so tightly to control and start trusting God with our stories. What are you trying to control that you need to surrender?

Community matters. Speciaoza is grateful for the support of DuHope staff, and her healing happens in the context of loving community. Freedom isn't meant to be walked alone.

Let’s  remember that the liberty Christ offers goes deeper than any earthly freedom. It's a freedom that can't be taken away by circumstances or mistakes. It's a freedom that transforms us from the inside out and empowers us to live with hope, purpose, and peace.
